The Opening of the Beaujolais Nouveau 2011
17 November 2011
By Jacques Fayolle.
The evening to celebrate the arrival and first tasting of the Beaujolais Nouveau 2011 was most enjoyable. It must be noted that Alliance Française de La Sunshine Coast was the first in Australia to taste the Beaujolais 2011 release. 47 people gathered at the Rydges Oasis Resort in Caloundra to sample the wine and listen to a very informative presentation by distinguished Alliance Francais member, Dr Mark Welsh. Mark holds the title of Commandeur de la Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.
Thank you Mark – I am sure we all learnt some interesting new facts which will enhance our enjoyment of the Beaujolais (and other French wines) in the future. Thank you also to Rydges and Barry Stack for the continual flow of French themed nibblies to compliment the Beaujolais.
It was pleasing to meet so many new people from a diverse selection of backgrounds – all interested in French wine, food and culture. The committee especially extends a very warm welcome to our new members who joined the Alliance Française de la Sunshine Coast during this celebration.
The lucky winners of the raffle prizes were – Elisabeth Sauterel who won a gift hamper of luxury Occitane products and Jacqueline Navaro, who won a bottle of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Congratulations ladies.
The winemaker for the sampled Beaujolais Nouveau 2011 is Georges Duboeuf.

Almost all the wine produced in the region is red wine from the Gamay grape, of which the heavily-marketed Beaujolais Nouveau is the most famous, the village crus the most prized. The Beaujolais Region is located south of Burgundy and its climate is warmer. Because of the difference in region, the Pinot Noir grape normally grown in Burgundy would not do well here. The best soils are mostly granite |
