FRANCE • DRAMA COMEDY• 97 MINS • 2016 • M
Directed by: JUSTINE TRIET
Starring: Virginie Efira, Vincent Lacoste, Melvil Poupaud, Laurent Poitrenaux
“You’re the queen of drama queens,” states the love interest of Victoria (an irresistible Virginie Efira, Up for Love, 2016), a shrewd Parisian criminal lawyer and single mother battling to survive in the wild and unpredictable worlds of the courtroom and the bedroom.
Low sexual libido is just one of Victoria’s many mid-life crises in this delightfully quirky and amusing contemporary romcom which opened the Critics’ Week at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. She is also juggling two young daughters; an ex-husband whose blog lays bare her past exploits; a much younger potential love interest (Vincent Lacoste, Eden, AFFFF15) who happens to be an ex-drug-dealer; and to top it all off, she is working on what could be the strangest assault trial in legal history involving a chimpanzee and a dalmatian as character witnesses.
Vivid and colourful cinematography further highlight the comedic talents of an immensely likeable Efira, while director Justine Triet delivers tons of energy and even more outlandishness to this portrait of a fallible and identifiable female character. One part battle-of-the-sexes and one part a quest for balance, this is a comedy guaranteed to charm.

FRANCE, GERMANY • THRILLER, DRAMA • 87 MINS • 2015 • MA 15+
Directed by: VINCENT GARENQ
Starring: Daniel Auteuil, Sebastian Koch, Marie-Josée Croze, Christelle Cornil

Based on an extraordinary true story which rocked the headlines several times in both France and Germany, this epic tale of a father’s relentless search for justice will electrify you to the core.

On July 10, 1982, Kalinka Bamberski, fourteen years old, was found dead in her stepfather’s house in Germany. Despite the suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, the case was swiftly closed without conviction. However, the battle was far from over for her devastated father, André Bamberski, rivetingly embodied by Cannes, César and BAFTA award-winner Daniel Auteuil. Over the subsequent three decades, André would make it his sole mission to apprehend and imprison the man that he believed killed his daughter, no matter what the cost. Constant injustices hurled in the path of his exhaustive campaign intensify André’s frustration, but ultimately serve to reinforce his determination to obtain the truth.

This thrilling and stirring journey will plunge you to the very depths of one father’s most desperate emotions, forcing the question of how far would you go to defend the memory and dignity of your own child?

MONSIEUR CHOCOLAT

FRANCE • DRAMA • 119 MINS • 2015 • M
Directed by: ROSCHDY ZEM
Starring: Omar Sy, James Thierrée, Noémie Lvovsky, Frédéric Pierrot

This lively and unmissable box-office hit details the fascinating rise-and-fall story of the first popular Afro-Cuban artist of the French stage. Lavishly set in stunning Belle Époque Paris, it is beautifully realised through the energised performances of the charismatic Omar Sy (The Intouchables, 2011) and real-life circus-performer (and grandson of Charlie Chaplin), James Thierrée.

During the late 1800s, former slave Chocolat (Sy) is making a living in a provincial French circus performing the role of a tooth-baring cannibal named Kalanka — a surprisingly novel spectacle for the country people who have never seen a black man before. It is here that he impresses established performer George Footit (Thierrée) who takes him under his wing. Together, they develop a routine which catapults them to stardom, glamour and riches in Paris’ Nouveau Cirque. However, the satisfaction of success can only last so long as Chocolat’s desire for equality begins to take hold.

As entertaining as it is timely, Monsieur Chocolat blends sharp and impressive physical comedy with moving compassion, gloriously restoring the great legacy of this trailblazing artist.

LA FOLLE HISTOIRE DE MAX ET LÉON

FRANCE, BELGIUM • COMEDY • 98 MINS • 2015 • M
Directed by: JONATHAN BARRÉ
Starring: David Marsais, Grégoire Ludig, Alice Vial, Dominique Pinon

Two dimwit soldiers entirely unwilling to fight for their country venture all the way from the dank European trenches of World War II to the scorching dry sands of the Sahara in this giggle-inducing romp.

War has broken out in France in 1939 and thousands of men are being conscripted to defend their people and their country. Max (Grégoire Ludig), and Léon (David Marsais) have other priorities, which do not include the battlefield. Unfortunately, their efforts to avoid recruitment are in vain and they are thrust into their worst nightmare, immediately devising a hilarious succession of ridiculous ploys in a frenzy to extract themselves by any means possible. But the forces controlling their fate will not let them go so easily. Max and Léon quickly realise that the consequences of war are far less pleasing to their way of life than they could have anticipated.

Two barrels of physical humour, Ludig and Marsais have a firecracker chemistry, so sit back and enjoy as they turn this well-known piece of history into an explosive, inappropriate and refreshing comedy.

FROM THE LAND OF THE MOON
MAL DE PIERRES

FRANCE, BELGIUM, CANADA • DRAMA • 120 MINS • 2015 • MA 15+
Directed by: NICOLE GARCIA
Starring: Marion Cotillard, Louis Garrel, Alex Brendemühl, Brigitte Roüan

An intoxicating story of romance that will ignite yearning in the coldest of hearts, this passionate tale stars two of the most desirable actors of modern European cinema: Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night, 2014) and Louis Garrel (Saint Laurent, AF FFF15).

The always luminous Cotillard plays Gabrielle, a spirited and willful woman who is convinced that true love exists for her, one of wild excitement and unending feverish emotion. Her conservative rural family is at a loss with what to do with her obsessive and lofty ideals. To Gabrielle’s horror, they enlist José, a poor Spanish bricklayer to marry her and turn her into a respectable woman. When she is admitted to a health centre for months of treatment and meets André (Garrel), a lieutenant wounded in the Indochina War, her body and mind erupt with the feelings she has so long craved, and she is determined to preserve this at any cost. Presented in competition in the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, this sweeping tale explores the very depths of female desire, and ends with a revelation of powerful and enduring love.

THINGS TO COME
L’AVENIR

FRANCE, GERMANY • DRAMA • 100 MINS • 2016 • M
Directed by: MIA HANSEN-LØVE
Starring: Isabelle Huppert, André Marcon, Édith Scob, Roman Kolinka

The incomparable Isabelle Huppert (Valley of Love, AF FFF16), is at her marvellous best in the internationally celebrated new film from Mia Hansen-Løve (Father of MyChildren, 2009), the profoundly moving story of a fifty something woman who, after living comfortably for many years, must suddenly reinvent her life.

Nathalie (Huppert) teaches philosophy at a college in Paris. Married with two grown-up children, her spare time is devoted to the books she publishes as a sideline, to former students who have become friends and, above all, to her overly possessive mother (the great Édith Scob). But out of nowhere, Nathalie’s husband Heinz (André Marcon) announces he is leaving her for another woman, the first of a series of events that will completely upend Nathalie’s world, and force her to reassess her future.

Tender and contemplative, Things to Come depicts a story that, whilst common in real life, is rarely presented with such warmth and intelligence on screen. Having garnered extraordinary critical acclaim at major festivals worldwide, it certifies Hansen-Løve as one of the most distinguished voices in French cinema, and is a must-see Festival highlight.
